Banni cattle fair
The Banni Pashu Mela is a highly anticipated annual event organized in Banni by the Banni Breeders’ Association. First held in 2007, the Mela has since been conducted five times, serving as a vital platform for connecting local Maldharis with pastoral communities beyond Kachchh. It plays a crucial role in establishing a local market for animal trade, strengthening the region’s livestock economy.
Initially organized by the Hodka Paryatan Samiti, the responsibility of hosting the Mela was later taken over by the Banni Breeders’ Association, with support from local NGOs and corporate sponsors. Each year, the event revolves around specific themes and objectives, facilitating discussions and consultations with experts on issues relevant to pastoral livelihoods.
Beyond animal trade, the Pashu Mela features a diverse range of activities, including competitions for livestock—evaluating the appearance and strength of cows, buffaloes, and camels—as well as milk yield contests for cattle. Traditional sports such as human races and wrestling (bakhmallakhado) add to the excitement, while documentary screenings shed light on subjects like bullock trade and pastoralist lifestyles. The event also showcases Kachchhi music and cultural performances, celebrating the rich heritage of the region.
